Lifetime Achievement Award

Celebrating 70 years- Lifetime Achievement Award

Our President and CEO, Mr. Dave Powell, recently attended the 2018 DCI Business Summit in Toronto. At that event, he was presented with a very prestigious award and we would like to take this opportunity to tell you about it!

The DCI Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has been exemplary within the food retail industry. Award winners have either pioneered a successful venture, or have “done the impossible.”

It all started with a small retail store establish by his father, Herbert J. Powell, in 1948. Now, 70 years later, Mr. Powell has taken that vision to unimaginable heights, never losing sight of the importance of pushing forward while keeping the business local, as well as family and community oriented.

Today, the Powell Group of Companies has grown to include two successful supermarkets (Powell’s Supermarket Bay Roberts and Carbonear), Golden Crust Bakery, Dave’s Service Centre, Atlantic Restaurant Supplies, Atlantic’s Best Meats, and Atlantic Grocery Distributors (AGD) – the largest independently owned and operated wholesale distributor in Newfoundland and Labrador, with a 200,000 square foot warehouse facility serving more than 2,000 customers across the province.

By building on the business his father started seven decades ago to create the group of companies you see today, Mr. Powell, along with his family and large team of dedicated employees, have done what many would call “impossible.”

Congratulations on receiving this well-deserved honour from your industry peers and for reaching such a remarkable milestone! Proudly serving Newfoundland Labrador for 70 years- here’s to many more!

About Powell’s Supermarket

In 1948, Herbert J. Powell, of Carbonear, opened a small local retail store. After having some success in the grocery business, he relocated with his wife Isabelle and their four children to the town of Bay Roberts in 1955 to open Conception Bay’s very first Supermarket. Another location would be added in Carbonear and then Harbour Grace.

Today, Powell’s Supermarket is continuing their success through the business practices of Mr. Powell’s son, David J. Powell, and his grandchildren, David Jr and Adam Powell. Keeping the business locally owned and operated and family oriented has remained the focus of Powell’s Supermarket.

Fort McMurray Wildfire Relief

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”315″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” css_animation=”left-to-right”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]When the Fort McMurray Wildfire news first broke, across Canada, it was all anyone could talk about. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the impact was huge and very unique. It’s well known that Newfoundlanders have a special connection to Fort McMurray, as many live and travel to the city to support their families.

Powell’s Supermarket quickly decided to help friends, family, and all those affected by accepting Canadian Red Cross donations in-store. We also announced that Powell’s Supermarket would match all in-store donations!

We collected $6,500 and matched it for a grand total of $13,000. Anna Power, from the Canadian Red Cross NL Chapter, was on-hand for a cheque presentation at Powell’s Supermarket in Bay Roberts with our Director of Retail Operations, Adam Powell, and other Powell’s Supermarket employees.

Thank you all so much for your support! We’re all in this together.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
