Powell’s Harbour Grace recognized by local food back for their support.
Friends from the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank visited Powell’s Supermarket, Harbour Grace recently – they wanted to send a huge thank you for supporting their organization all year round, and especially during the holiday season when demand is greater than ever. President Grant Koehler and some other volunteers were on site to present store manager Tracey Lockyer and staff with a card and balloons to show their appreciation.
“The help you have been giving us has been beautiful,” Grant told Powell’s Harbour Grace staff, adding, “you have contributed throughout the year. It keeps us going. You deliver to us which we appreciate as well. Keep up the great work.”
This year the organization will help about 120 people through their annual Christmas hamper drive. Each year demand increases, and the demographic seeking help gets younger and younger. That’s why the support of individuals, community groups, and local businesses, like Powell’s Supermarket, is crucial for their operation to thrive.
“One of our volunteers mentioned the other day that we have people coming in who were registered with us back in 2012. Now they are back again. We recently had 5 new young people register- some with children, some with no spouse. We have seen such a rise in the young people,” Grant says.
As Christmas approaches, volunteers are working at capacity to ensure they have everything they need to help community members who are struggling this time of year. The organization has taken to social media to raise awareness about what they do and help garner further support so they in turn can assist more people.
“Those donations are what sustain us,” Grant adds.
Powell’s Supermarket Harbour Grace is proud to be a part of their efforts.
